Steps

  1. Choose “Live games” in the sidebar, then click “Create game”. This page also opens when you click “Play now” in the Library or “Replay hard questions” in a report.
  2. Under “1. Choose a question source”, the “My banks” tab comes first and is open by default, followed by “My exams”, “Public library” and “Played games”. Click “Select” on the card you want. Each card shows how many of its questions are playable out of the total.
  3. Under “2. Settings”, choose the options in the table below. If you leave “Game title” empty, the game uses the source's title.
  4. Click “Create and open lobby”.

Options and limits

Pacing
“Teacher-paced”: the whole class works on the same question, and you move to the next question on the projected screen (default). “Student-paced”: each student works at their own speed, and you follow their progress.
Format
“Individual”, “Team play” (2 to 8 teams, 4 by default) or “Golden Bell” (Teacher-paced only).
Auto-play
“Off” (default) or 5, 10 or 15 seconds. Teacher-paced: the answer and scores show for that long, then the next question opens by itself, and after the last question the game ends by itself. Student-paced: once every student has finished, the game ends by itself after that many seconds. Not available with Golden Bell.
Picture puzzle
Turn it on as an extra so students guess a keyword or a mystery image. Can't be used together with Golden Bell.
Scoring
“Speed”: correct and fast answers earn 500 to 1000 points. “Accuracy”: each correct answer earns 1000 points. You can also turn on “Streak bonus for correct answers in a row (up to +100 per question)”.
Time per question
From 5 seconds to 300 seconds (5 minutes), 30 seconds by default. Every question uses the same time.
Max questions
Leave it empty to use all questions, up to 100. If you enter a number, that many questions are taken from the start of the source, and only then shuffled if shuffling is on.
Who can join
“Anyone with the PIN” or only the students of one class. If you choose a class, students must sign in and be members of that class.
Nickname
“Free choice (inappropriate words filtered)” or “Random names only for guests”. Signed-in students can always use their account name.
Allow guests
When it's on, anyone with the PIN can join with just a nickname, no account needed. It turns off automatically when you choose a class.
Shuffling
“Shuffle question order” and “Shuffle answer order”. All players see the same order. True/false questions always keep True first, then False.
Showing answers and the leaderboard
“Show the correct answer after each question” (Student-paced only; when it's off, students only see the answers and their score when they finish) and “Show the leaderboard to students”.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Choose an exam or a question bank.” → you haven't chosen a question source yet.
  • “The selected source has no multiple-choice questions to play” → the source only has essay or fill-in-the-blank questions. Add multiple-choice questions or choose another source.
  • “Enter a keyword for the puzzle.” → you turned on Picture puzzle but haven't entered a keyword.
  • “PNG or JPEG image, up to 5 MB.” → the mystery image is in the wrong format or too large.
  • “The image was uploaded too long ago, please upload it again” → choose the image again, then create the game.
  • Questions are copied into the game when you create it. Editing the exam or bank afterwards doesn't change a game you've already created.
  • You can use your own exams and question banks, plus the banks shared in the Public library.
