Exam blueprints: draw exams automatically from a bank

An exam blueprint lets you set how many questions to take from each folder, difficulty and cognitive level (R, U, A, AA). Bút Nghiên draws exactly that many questions from one bank to create a draft exam. If the bank doesn't have enough questions, Bút Nghiên tells you what's missing and doesn't add questions on its own.

Steps

  1. Go to “Exam blueprints” → “New blueprint”. Enter the “Exam blueprint name”, choose the “Source question bank”, add a “Description / Notes”, then click “Create & configure blueprint”.
  2. On the “Question types included in the draw:” line, keep the question types you want to use (at least 1 type).
  3. Add a row for each folder (“+ Choose folders for the blueprint”), choose the difficulty tier, then fill in the number of questions in the Remember, Understand, Apply and Advanced application cells.
  4. Click “Check question sources” to see whether the bank has enough questions. Any cell that's short shows how many questions are needed, how many are available and how many are missing.
  5. Click “Save blueprint”. Each time you save, the blueprint's version number goes up.
  6. Click “Create draft exam”. In the “Generate draft exam from blueprint” box, enter the “Generated exam title”, the “Time limit (minutes)” (1–360) and the “Points per question”, choose a class if needed (if you leave “Open exam — every student on Bút Nghiên can see it”, every student with a Bút Nghiên account can see the exam), then click “Generate draft and open editor”. To reopen a saved blueprint, click its card (the blueprint name) in the list.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Keep at least 1 allowed question type” → tick at least one question type again.
  • “The question bank is … questions short of the blueprint…” → lower the number of questions in the flagged cells, or add questions to the bank.
  • “Version conflict: the blueprint was edited in another tab…” → the blueprint was just changed in another tab; Bút Nghiên reloads the latest version automatically, then you redo your changes and save.
  • The generated exam is saved right away as a draft in “Exams”. Each question is copied into the exam separately, so editing the exam doesn't change the bank. You don't need to click “Save draft” right away; if you edit the exam and then click “Save draft”, the new version replaces this draft (as long as nobody has taken it yet).
  • To open the draft exam to students: go to “Exams”, click “Settings” on the draft, choose “Open to students” under “Exam room status”, then click “Save exam settings”.
  • A blueprint that has already generated an exam can't be deleted; use “Archive blueprint” instead.
