Assign homework, set submission rules and grade

Give a class a written or file-upload assignment, set the due date and maximum score, decide whether late submissions or resubmissions are allowed, then grade and return scores to each student.

Steps

  1. Go to “Assignments” → “Create new assignment”.
  2. Section “1. Content & Instructions”: enter the “Assignment title” and the “Detailed instructions / Requirements”.
  3. Section “2. Attachments / Reference materials”: click “Upload file” (PDF, Word .docx, Excel .xlsx, PNG/JPG; up to 15MB per file).
  4. Section “3. Settings & Policies”: choose “Assign to class”, the “Due date”, the “Maximum score” (1–100), and tick “Allow late submissions” and “Allow resubmission” if you want.
  5. Click “Save draft” (students can't see the assignment yet) or “Publish now”.
  6. The assignment detail page has “Edit assignment”, “Publish assignment”, “Close submissions” (“Reopen submissions” once closed), “Export to Excel” and “Archive” buttons. The “Submission tracker” table shows who has submitted, who submitted late and who hasn't submitted.
  7. Click “Grade” on a student's row. In the “Grading board”, review the content and attachments, enter the “Score awarded” and the “Overall feedback for the student”, then click “Return score” or “Return score & Next”.

Options and limits

Allow late submissions
Students can still submit after the due date; their work is marked as late.
Allow resubmission
Students can edit and resubmit while their work hasn't been graded. Each submission is saved as a new version.
Archive
The assignment is hidden from students' lists and from your “In use” view. Find it again with the “Archived” filter on the “Assignments” page, and click “Restore” to bring it back (students aren't notified). Submissions and scores are kept; while it's archived, the assignment can't be published, closed or reopened.

Common errors and how to fix them

  • “Please enter an assignment title”, “Please choose the class to receive the assignment” or “Please choose a due date” → fill in all the required fields.
  • “File … exceeds the maximum size (15MB)” → compress the file or split it into several smaller files.
  • “Score must be between 0 and …” → enter a score that doesn't exceed the maximum score.
  • A “Version conflict / Data has changed” box appears → the student just submitted a new version, or the score was just changed somewhere else; click “Load latest version”, then grade again.
  • “The due date must be later than now.” when editing an assignment → choose a new due date later than now, or keep the old due date if you don't want to change it.
  • “The due date must be later than now.” or “The maximum score must be greater than 0.” when creating an assignment → fix the field that shows the error (this also applies when you click “Save draft”).
  • You can still change a graded submission: click “View / edit score”, change the score, then click “Update score”. The grading box says “Graded submission …”, plus “Grade changed … times” once the score has been changed. The notification that returns the score to the student is titled “Graded: …” with the assignment name and gives the score, for example “Score: 8/10” or “Score: 8.5/10”. Due dates in notifications are shown in Vietnam time, in the form 23:59 15/01/2027 (in other languages the time zone is added, for example GMT+7).
  • Students get a notification when an assignment is given, when it is reopened or its due date is changed while it is open, when their score is returned, and when the score of a graded assignment is changed to a different score (the notification “Assignment score changed: …” gives the new score and the previous one; changing only the feedback doesn't send it, and neither does an archived assignment). Once a submission is graded, the grading panel reminds you with the line “If the score changes, the student is told the new score.”
  • Click “Edit assignment” to change the title, instructions, due date, maximum score, and whether late or repeat submissions are allowed; students see the new details as soon as you save. The new due date must be later than now; if you keep the old due date (even one that has passed), you can still save. The maximum score can't be changed once a submission has been graded or the assignment uses a rubric.
  • Closed submissions by mistake, or want to give more time on a closed assignment? Click “Reopen submissions”. If the old due date has passed, Bút Nghiên asks for a new one (it must be later than now). An archived assignment must be restored before it can be reopened. A closed assignment can only be reopened with the “Reopen submissions” button.
  • Clicking “Publish assignment” on a draft whose due date has passed: Bút Nghiên asks for a new due date (it must be later than now) before publishing.
